Kahalu'u Ward Message 9/3/23

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

In our family, we recently had a new addition! This was totally unplanned. Last Saturday, we brought home a new puppy. Attention Dads: Be careful walking into Ko'olau Pets at the mall! We all fell in love at first sight with this little pup and decided to make him a part of our family. From the start, he loved to be held, and he sat calmly in our arms. In the coming days, as we cared for him, we got to see more of his personality. He was patient in his pen, he walked where we walked, he easily slept in our arms or lap. He has his active side, too, but his calmness has rubbed off on us and has lowered stress levels. Being meek and mild is infectious. Maybe you know someone in your life like that, who can somehow absorb your worries, be your strength at times of weakness, and rebalance your world. We can also turn to Christ. Meekness was one of the most abundant attributes in the Savior’s life. He Himself taught His disciples, “Learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.” Matthew 11:29 Meekness is a Christlike attribute. The seed of meekness is in all of us. We must nurish this seed over time to see it grow. It's something we must work at when times are most difficult. When we become submissive to the Lord, the Spirit can tutor us. By controlling our reactions, being calm and temperate, and avoiding contention, we will begin to qualify for the gift of meekness. President Henry B. Eyring once said, “When we with faith control our tempers and subdue our pride, the Holy Ghost gives His approval, and sacred promises and covenants become sure.” Another step to attain meekness is to become humble. The Lord instructed, “Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.” D&C 112:10 I believe, brothers and sisters, that those who are meek and humble are able to acknowledge and understand the Lord’s answers to their prayers. God’s promise to the humble is that He will lead them by the hand. I truly believe that we will avoid pitfalls and sadness in our lives as long as we walk hand in hand with the Lord.

Love, Bishop Tano
