Dear Kahalu'u Ward,

It's been a great start to the summer for the Youth of our ward! It began with the end of the school year, senior graduations, and last week, we had a first-time combined YM & YW High Adventure to Maui! We took 26 Youth and 12 Leaders on a journey to strengthen their unity, show them they can accomplish hard things, and grow in their testimonies of Jesus Christ being surrounded by fellow disciples. Between the long challenging hikes, sleeping in tents while enduring 30 degree temperature, and leaving behind cellular service (maybe the biggest challenge of them all from the youth's point of view, haha!)... I felt a huge humbling feeling of gratitude to the Lord for being able to share these moments of my life with these truly valiant youth. We faced more than a few unexpected challenges, but through each one, they displayed grit, relied on faith as a first resort, and there was no obstacle that we did not come through. In fact, they considered our challenges cherished highlights of the trip!

On one of our hikes, the ascent was long and steep. Our journey was along the Pipiwai Trail that lead up to Wailua Falls. It's known as a popular hike and it's part of Haleakala National Park. Each step along the way felt like walking up steps instead of a path. Due to the difficulty, there is a natural tendency to constantly look down, and focus on pushing forward until you get to the end of the hike. The ground is uneven, there are loose rocks, and veins of tree roots that can twist an ankle on any step. The focus on the trudging challenge can bear you down. Just as I was thinking that, I heard one our YM, Manoa Kahalepuna ahead of me say, "Look up!" At that moment on the trail, I lifted my head to the sky and saw myself surrounded in a beautiful bamboo forest. I could see the clear sunny sky peering over the treetops, and hear the sound of rustling of the river which meant that we must be getting closer to the falls. There was nature's beauty all around us.

Sometimes while we are faced down tackling the daily trials, challenges, obstacles in our lives, and everything seems hard, we miss the chance to enjoy the many blessings around us. If we simply "Look up" to the heavens for help, and push away the darkness, doubt, and fear (strong tools of the adversary), we can find that the Lord is with us in each and every step we take.

The First Presidency chose this year's 2025 Youth Theme from D&C 6:36. "Look unto me in every thought. Doubt not, fear not."  These are not words of a prophet, these are direct words from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ found in latter-day scripture. There is a verse that precedes verse 36, found in 34 that provides encouragement in tough times. "Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail."

I testify that these words are true and powerful. That they come from Jesus Christ, the source of all love. I know that He is always there for us. I want to thank the parents of the ward, who allowed your youth to come on this year's High Adventure, and trust me and our wonderful and dedicated youth leaders. We love our youth. We love you all. We love our Savior Jesus Christ.

Love, Bishop Tano

Talofa lava friends and fams !! This week's spiritual thought comes from my favorite scripture (of many) which is in Mosiah 2:41 which reads, "And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it." I'm sure I've shared this one before but the doctrine rings so true. I have such a strong testimony of this because I've experienced this first-hand. The gospel has never done me dirty and it will only ever do me good. I have no doubt about that! Alofas,

Sister Fano <3
