Kahalu'u Ward Message 8/28/22

Aloha, my ward family,

A couple of months ago, Godfrey and I attended a wedding reception at BYU-Hawaii. This was the night that the bridge at Kahana Bay was closed due to a water main break. A couple of people we knew were also at the reception and they left before us and were turned back at the bridge. They texted us to let us know about the road closure. However, we had silenced our phones and forgotten to turn them back on so we didn’t get the texts. We drove to Kahana and had to turn around and go the LONG way home.

This made me think about Pres. Nelson’s 2020 General Conference talk “Hear Him” and his plea “to do whatever it takes to increase your spiritual capacity to receive personal revelation.”

Communication is a 2-way process and if one end is closed (phones on silence) then messages can’t get through. We need to live worthily to be able to receive the promptings we need.

On the Church website there’s a recurring section “How I Hear Him” written by many of our leaders and lots of them talk about prayer. Elder D. Todd Christofferson says that “the one thing that is required is the heart - the real desire to receive what the Lord would have us receive.” That desire would take our phones off silent.

Elder Neil L. Andersen says, “Honest, sincere personal prayer in quiet moments opens the window to revelation from our Heavenly Father. We hear him. He speaks to us. Trying to listen to the quiet impressions of the spirit and promising my Heavenly Father that I will be more attentive to where I can improve seems to bring a greater ability for me to hear Him.”

I hope we can all pay attention to how we each Hear Him and keep our end of the line open.

With love,

Cathy Kaonohi
