Kahalu'u Ward Message 11/12/23

You are not alone.

In Mosiah 18:9 we read:

“Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—“

When someone we know experiences loss or hardship, we are encouraged to offer comfort, empathy, and support. This practice reflects our fundamental belief that we are all one family and brothers and sisters here on Earth. There is great importance for us to bear one another's burdens when we become aware of someone in need.

One of the ways that we can mourn with those who mourn is through active and sincere expressions of compassion. This may involve offering kind words, acts of service, and heartfelt prayers for the individual or family. Genuine empathy and support can provide solace and strength during times of sorrow. This is only possible if we know about what others’ burdens and struggles might be.

By keeping up with our administering duties and magnifying our callings, we can have a better idea if anyone stands in need of support and also learn how our ward family can help. In addition, let us ask ourselves these questions: Are we reaching out to those we haven’t seen in a while to check in? Are we dropping by their homes, calling them or even just sending a simple text to see how they are doing and if they need anything? Do they truly understand that they matter to us and are loved?

My family had been on vacation for a few weeks and then we got sick when we came back. We ended up missing a few consecutive weeks of church. A member of our ward texted me, just to reach out and see if we were ok since he hadn’t seen us in a while. Just the simple gesture let me know that people recognized our absence and cared enough to ask how we were doing. It made me feel LOVED.

If you are in need of assistance or service, please don’t be afraid to ask. Remember we covenanted to be there for one another and would be happy to help.

Let us all strive to improve in this important duty to mourn with those who mourn, especially as we approach this holiday season.
