Kahalu'u Ward Message 11/9/25

Aloha everyone,
I wanted to share a short talk from our Prophet, President Dallin H. Oaks, that really resonated with me this past week as I was considering the needs in our community. It’s called “Helping the Poor and Distressed,” from the October 2022 General Conference. President Oaks’s talk is a powerful reminder that our duty to help others is a core part of our faith. We have a covenantal obligation to care for the poor and distressed which is not optional; and this obligation is tied directly to being a disciple of Jesus Christ. The ultimate test will be whether we served Him by serving others. He urges us to be “anxiously engaged in a good cause” of our own free will (D&C 58:27). This means we should not wait to be commanded or directed in everything, but proactively look for ways to do good.
This teaching is critically important right now. With the effects of the federal shutdown creating increased uncertainty for many families in our area, the need for help with essentials like food and shelter is immediate and real. President Oaks' message relayed two different ways that we as members, can help those who are in distress:
Prioritize Fast Offerings: This is the Lord’s way to quickly provide food, shelter, and utilities to our own local members who are suffering hardship. Please consider being generous this Fast Sunday.
Look for Unscripted Service: Think proactively about how you can be "anxiously engaged." Is there someone you know, or who lives near you, that could use a meal? Is there a family that needs child care or help covering an unexpected bill? A small, timely act of kindness can prevent a larger crisis, as well as bring peace of mind and the spirit to the homes of those we serve.
By placing our whole trust in the Lord and actively extending our hands in service, we follow the Prophet's counsel and fulfill our covenant to care for our Kahaluʻu ʻohana and the wider Hawaiʻi community around us.
