Aloha Kahalu'u Ward,
Today’s sacrament program will be led by the youth, which inspired me to reflect on my experience in the program. It made me realize how grateful I am to have grown up in such a strong group. I recently finished the program but am now back helping out as a leader. I’ve also been attending the YSA ward, and after talking to some of my new friends, I started to realize how lucky I am to have been part of such a large group. It never occurred to me that as a teenager, I had the amazing opportunities to participate in all the activities the leaders helped coordinate and plan until now. Most of my friends from the YSA grew up in small groups and didn’t get to do as many things.
As Uncle Ben once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” (Not the bishop, but Spiderman’s Uncle Ben.) This line is mainly associated with Spiderman, but it applies perfectly to our program. Growing up in a large, supportive LDS youth group is a blessing not everyone receives. I’ve had leaders, especially our bishop, who cared, friends who strengthened me, and countless activities that taught me who I am and who I can become. These opportunities have shaped all of our youth spiritually, socially, and emotionally—and that kind of foundation is a sacred gift.
For the Youth in our ward, when you leave, you take the power of what you learned. The experiences are meant to be shared and passed on. It’s an invitation. Let the blessings you receive be the blessings you give. Since I was able to finish my last five years in the Youth with our amazing bishop and past and current youth leaders, I’ve learned that as a new adult, I now have the responsibility to pass on what I’ve learned.
The experiences we have been given are meant to be shared, multiplied, and passed on. This scripture is not a warning but an invitation: “For of him unto whom much is given, much is required” (Doctrine & Covenants 82:3). . As you step into the next chapters of your lives, remember the example this ward set for you. Lift those around you the way you were lifted.
