Kahalu'u Ward Message 10/16/22

Updated: Oct 22, 2022

Aloha Kahalu'u Ward,

Doctrine and Covenants Section 4 reads:

1 Now behold, a amarvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men.

2 Therefore, O ye that embark in the aservice of God, see that ye bserve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand cblameless before God at the last day.

3 Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are acalled to the work;

4 For behold the afield is white already to bharvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in cstore that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul;

5 And faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work.

6 Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence.

7 Ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Amen.

Driving to work on Tuesday afternoon I was so excited to tune into Elder Maddux Vilardi’s mission call announcement on the Facebook Live video. Memories and feelings of excitement rushed over me as I could clearly remember my mission call 20 years ago. As he read the standard intro to his mission call, I could feel the excitement grow as everyone including himself was so anxiously awaiting to hear where he will be serving. After he announce Italy, Rome the room was filled with cheers, tears, and embraces. I am so stoked for Elder Vilardi and all the young men and women in our Kahalu’u ward who are stepping up to the plate to serve our Savior, Jesus Christ.

After I logged out of the video stream I was so charged up, I tried to recite The Doctrine and Covenants, Section 4 out loud. On my mission in Japan, we would recite it every day in English and Japanese. Now, 20 years later I can still get through it in English, but my Japanese definitely needs some work. I am excited to hear about the many wonderful experiences that our missionaries will return with, as well as the many people that were specifically prepared to be found by them. Serving my mission was one of the best accomplishments in my life, as I’m sure everyone who serves feels the same way.

I like to end with a quote from Elder Richard G. Scott’s talk in the April 2006 General Conference, “Now is the Time to Serve a Mission. I urge you not to pray to know whether you should go; rather, ask the lord to guide you in whatever may be necessary to become a worthy, empowered full-time missionary. You will never regret serving a mission, but you most probably will regret not serving if that is your choice.”

I am grateful for my mission and I continue to lean upon the many things I learned on a mission even 20 years later. In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Ben Hirokawa
