Aloha Kahalu’u Ward,

As most of you know, our beloved Prophet, President Russel M. Nelson, has passed away. Throughout my life, I can recall listening to President Nelson’s talks as he served as a Twelve Apostle since 1984 and then as our Prophet from 2018. He was one of my favorite Apostles growing up, whom I admired. As he spoke, I could always feel his genuineness and love for me as I listened to his words. I know many of us have our favorite talks or quotes given by President Nelson; this is mine. It comes from one of my favorite talks given by President Nelson in a 2001 General Conference titled, “Set in Order Thy House.” Within the talk, President Nelson speaks about a river rafting trip he took with his family. Things didn't go as expected, and he almost drowned. Here are a couple of excerpts from the talk that I love.

“Brothers and sisters, I nearly lost my life learning a lesson that I now give to you. As we go through life, even through very rough waters, a father’s instinctive impulse to cling tightly to his wife or to his children may not be the best way to accomplish his objective. Instead, if he will lovingly cling to the Savior and the iron rod of the gospel, his family will want to cling to him and to the Savior. This lesson is surely not limited to fathers. Regardless of gender, marital status, or age, individuals can choose to link themselves directly to the Savior, hold fast to the rod of His truth, and lead by the light of that truth. By so doing, they become examples of righteousness to whom others will want to cling.

He also goes on to say later in his talk,

“Brethren and sisters, material possessions and honors of the world do not endure. But your union as wife, husband, and family can. The only duration of family life that satisfies the loftiest longings of the human soul is forever. No sacrifice is too great to have the blessings of an eternal marriage. To qualify, one needs only to deny oneself of ungodliness and honor the ordinances of the temple. By making and keeping sacred temple covenants, we evidence our love for God, for our companion, and our real regard for our posterity—even those yet unborn.

Our family is the focus of our greatest work and joy in this life; so will it be throughout all eternity, when we can “inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, … powers, dominions, … exaltation and glory.”

I am so grateful for President Nelson’s inspiring words. I am trying daily to heed his counsel and make my family my focus.  I am grateful to spiritual giants like President Nelson, who guided us for many years, and most of all, I am grateful for our loving Heavenly Father who calls Prophets and Apostles to guide and direct the church, especially in these latter days. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
