Aloha Kahalu'u Ward,
Recently, I have been learning more about trust and faith in our Heavenly Father and Savior. In the scriptures we read many stories that teach about faith through trials and deliverance because of that faith. Consider Daniel who was thrown in the lions den for worshiping and praying to God despite the decree to only worship King Darius. Daniel did not shirk in his diligence and was untouched by the lions.(Daniel 6:22) Another example is in the Book of Mormon in Alma 14. In this chapter Alma and Amulek were thrown into prison by angry people in the land of Ammonihah for preaching the gospel. Although it wasn’t immediate and they suffered through mockery and violence, they were freed and those who were against them were slain. Through these two examples we can see how faith and trust in God can lead to our deliverance.
However, I want to focus on faith and trust when circumstances are far from ideal. Abinidi was a faithful servant of God who was sent to warn King Noah and his people to repent of their sins. Although he had done exactly what the Lord commanded, he was burned for his preaching. If we look again to Alma and Amulek’s story, those against God had all the women and children who believed in the words of Alma and Amulek burnt for their faith. What did Daniel do differently than those women and children who believed when others didn’t, or what did Alma and Amulek preach that led to their saving and not Abinidi? The answer is that there wasn’t a difference. Those individuals exercised faith and trust in the Lord that went beyond only having faith if earthly life was ideal. Often times it’s easy to get stuck in the mindset of, “If I do everything I’m supposed to, I will be blessed with everything I believe I need.” This mentality can lead to faith in circumstances instead of faith in God. That is dangerous because in many cases faith doesn’t turn into the miracle we planned out. This earthly life may remain challenging but it is crucial to hold on to the trust that despite your circumstances here on earth, there are treasures beyond measure waiting for you in Heaven. (Hebrews 11:13,36-40) Now is the time to grow your testimony, trust, and faith in God. Learn of His love for you. If you can know even a sliver of that love, you can find faith that keeps you focused on Him and not outcomes. You can trust that there is so much more waiting for you unseen, because you are a child of a God who loves you. Stay faithful and keep trusting.
“And I said unto him: I know that He loveth His children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things” (1 Nephi 11:17)
Me ke aloha,
Eden Ohai
