Kahalu'u Ward Message 6/1/25

Aloha Kahalu'u Ward,
For the past three months I've been helping KC Chun coach a little league team in Kahalu'u. We are the Giants, and several kids on the team are in our ward: Ka'ena Mo'o, Toamotu Finau, Kia'i Garcia, Koen Chun, Blaise Hirokawa, and my son Kuahiwi. It's been so much fun to get to know them and watch them get better at the game.
My job during the games is to coach third base, which means that I'm the one yelling at them to "Hold up" or "Freeze" or "Go Home!" They're pretty good about listening, but a few times we have had some misadventures on the basepaths: running into outs or getting doubled off second base after a flyout. Other times they're so focused on getting to the next base that they don't hear me screaming at them to stop. Sometimes they score; sometimes they get out.
As I was thinking about what to write about for this message, I thought about how many times I might have had someone (a church leader? a parent? the Holy Ghost?) throwing their hands up and yelling at me to stop only for me to run right through their warnings and into trouble.
What I have learned to appreciate most as a coach is that even when the kids on the team make a mistake, my job is to be there to give them a high five and a pat on the helmet as they walk back to the dugout—to try to turn it into a teaching moment instead of a scolding. I believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ tries to help us in that same way. His way is one of repentance and mercy. Despite our experiences, most of us are still amateurs in the game of life, making errors every day. But Heavenly Father's plan allows for those mistakes to become moments of growth in the hopes that we'll be better for them.
I'm proud of the kids on our team and the progress they've made, and am happy to take inspiration from their willingness to get back out there the next inning and try again.

Today's spiritual thought comes from Alma 13:29 which reads, "Having faith on the Lord; having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; having the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest." The Plan of Salvation has been heavy on my mind the past few days since finding out about a cousin of mine whose health was declining. Sadly, that cousin of mine, Paki, passed away last night. As hard as this experience can be to go through, the Plan of Salvation sheds a different type of light and brings a different kind of comfort. As the scripture says, as long as we have faith and hope, we will one day be able to enter into His rest. I know Paki is in the Lord's rest and i can't wait for the day where him and his family and the rest of us can be reunited for eternity.
