Dear Kahalu’u Ward,
As we enjoy General Conference weekend, we are once again privileged to hear from chosen servants of the Lord who serve as his holy mouthpiece, sharing testimony and instruction for us in our day. No matter where we are in life, the Spirit can touch us through their messages in ways that you can know and feel with a sense of clarity that our Savior, Jesus Christ, knows you and loves you. We can find messages of healing, hope, or clear direction, among many other reassurances.
I always used to look forward to hearing from our prophet, Russell M. Nelson. I will miss his wisdom and his love that he so dearly expressed. When I was a young missionary in the Provo MTC, I was able to listen to 3 apostles. Richard G. Scott, Henry B. Eyring, and Russell M. Nelson. After each one spoke, my companion and I used to rush up after the meeting to try to get a handshake from them. I remember having the chance to make my way to Elder Nelson, and when I shook his hand, he looked in my eyes, and I will never forget his warm smile and piercing blue eyes. It was a feeling that stunned me and I specifically remember telling my companion that it was as if he was looking into my soul. He turned and said the same thing back. What a moment to never forget.
I've found in my life that there are very few talks that have stuck in my head forever. The words spoken of by Elder Nelson that day, have remained with me to this day. This amazing apostle who would one day be our beloved prophet, testified to all of the missionaries in the MTC, that he knew like Peter, James, and John knew, that Jesus Christ lives. That he is real. Allow that to sink in and marvel at the depth of what that means. I'm sure he spoke more to that, but I can't remember those other parts as well. His powerful testimony, strengthened mine that day and ever since. At the time, I was just a young impressionable missionary looking for ways to know of my own if this was all true. 30 years later, and I can truly testify that I know that the gospel of Jesus Christ, and our church that bears His name, is true. That there is a God who knows me. Who has blessed and protected me throughout my life as I have tried to do my best in keeping my covenants. May we all enjoy this October General Conference and find messages that increase our faith and love for the Lord, love for our families, and love for our fellow man.
With Love,
Bishop Tano
